The NSW Greens have today welcomed the early end to the second North Coast Shark Net Trial after concerns about the risk of entanglement of whales making an early migration along the NSW coast. Government data shows the shark nets trialled across the NSW North Coast have been ineffective, catching and killing vastly greater numbers harmless marine animals than target sharks.  

Delay of imminent commencement of seismic testing off Newcastle

Asset Energy has notified the ASX that seismic testing will commence off the coast of Newcastle from this Sun, 15 April. NSW Greens Marine Spokesperson Justin Field said, “It is disappointing that Asset Energy has not listened to the concerns of the local community, fishers, tourism operators and the NSW Government and pushed ahead with the proposed start of seismic testing off the coast of Newcastle from this Sunday”.

Greens call on Woolworths to exit pokies business

The Greens are calling on Woolworths to phase out pokies in its venues following media reports that staff at Woolworths-owned hotels have been spying on gamblers in order to boost profits One of the major allegations made by Federal Independent MP Andrew Wilkie following interviews with whistleblowers is that Woolworths hotels keep databases of customers who gamble, including their habits and behaviours. Federal and state gambling authorities are now investigating the allegations. NSW Greens MLC and Gambling Harm Spokesperson is calling on Woolworths not to wait for the watchdog ruling but do the right thing and exit pokies now.
