No gas drilling off NSW coast
Dear Prime Minister and NSW Premier,
I call on your Governments to take steps to cancel the offshore gas and oil exploration licence off the coast of Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney's Northern Beaches and to prohibit future offshore oil and gas development.
An offshore gas exploration licence, PEP11, is currently in effect off the coast between Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney's Northern Beaches.
Historical and planned seismic testing has been shown to have a detrimental impact on whale communication and navigation and on local marine biodiversity.
Offshore gas and oil exploration and development puts at risk local fishing and tourism industries that rely on a healthy ocean and vibrant marine and coastal environment.
Offshore drilling is a risky process that has failed many times in Australia and around the world with massive ecological and economic consequences.
I request that you take action to:Your petitioners request that the Parliament:
Prohibit future offshore gas and oil exploration and development off the NSW coastline.
Support the phasing out of all fossil fuel extraction in NSW and a transition to clean, renewable energy.
